What Is a Current Sensor?

A practical overview for engineers and procurement teams evaluating resistive solutions.

A current sensor is an integrated measurement module that detects and outputs a signal proportional to the current flowing through a conductor — without requiring the circuit to be broken or modified beyond inserting the sensor in line. Unlike a bare shunt resistor that outputs a raw millivolt signal, a current sensor module includes signal conditioning, amplification, and output circuitry in a single package, simplifying integration into battery management systems, motor controllers, and power monitoring equipment.

RARA offers two current sensor technologies.
Shunt-based current sensors (CB350, CB600, CB1000) use a precision low-resistance shunt element combined with an integrated signal conditioning circuit — delivering a calibrated voltage output proportional to current, with bidirectional measurement capability (both charge and discharge) across ±350A to ±1000A. These are supplied at 6–18VDC and are purpose-designed for EV battery pack current monitoring.

The
NFCT fluxgate current sensor operates on a fundamentally different principle — measuring the magnetic field generated by current in a conductor, with no electrical contact with the measured circuit. This gives fluxgate sensors extremely wide measurement range from 10mA to 100kA, galvanic isolation, and tolerance for high-voltage environments where direct shunt measurement would be impractical or unsafe.
Construction Technologies

-Shunt-based (CB350, CB600, CB1000)
-Fluxgate (NFCT series)
-Bidirectional measurement (both technologies)
-Calibrated voltage output
-STEP 3D files available (CB series)

Key Advantages

-Integrated signal conditioning — no external -circuitry needed
-Bidirectional ±current measurement
-Wide range: 10mA to 100kA (NFCT)
-Compact form factor for EV BMS integration

Applications

Where RARA current sensors are deployed in the field.

EV Battery Management Systems

The CB350, CB600, and CB1000 shunt-based sensors are specifically designed for EV battery pack current monitoring — measuring bidirectional charge and discharge current continuously to support accurate state-of-charge calculation. The 6–18VDC supply range and compact form factor suit integration directly into battery management unit (BMU) enclosures.
EV Charging Infrastructure

DC fast chargers and AC charging stations require accurate current measurement across the full charging current range. The CB1000 (±1000A, 25μΩ) and CB600 (±600A, 50μΩ) sensors provide the bidirectional measurement and low resistance needed to monitor charging current with minimal power loss in the current path.
Industrial Motor Control

Variable frequency drives, servo controllers, and soft starters need precise current feedback for torque control and overload protection. Shunt-based CB sensors provide a clean, conditioned output signal that interfaces directly with drive controller ADC inputs — simplifying design compared to using a bare shunt resistor with a separate amplifier circuit.

Renewable Energy & Grid Monitoring

The NFCT fluxgate sensor (10mA–100kA, tolerance 0.01–1%) covers the full current range needed in solar inverters, wind turbine power converters, and grid-tie systems — from small rooftop installations to utility-scale power monitoring where direct shunt measurement at high voltages would require costly isolation.
Rail & Heavy Industry

Traction systems, cranes, and heavy industrial equipment operate at very high currents where fluxgate sensing is preferred over shunt methods. The NFCT series handles up to 100kA — covering the largest industrial current measurement requirements with galvanic isolation from the high-voltage traction circuit.
Energy Storage & Testing

Battery test systems, energy storage systems (ESS), and power cycling test equipment require accurate bidirectional current measurement across wide dynamic ranges. The combination of CB-series shunt sensors for moderate currents and NFCT fluxgate for high-range measurement covers the full spectrum of battery and energy storage test requirements.
