What Is a High Voltage Resistor?
A practical overview for engineers and procurement teams evaluating resistive solutions.
A
high voltage
resistor is specifically engineered to operate safely and stably at supply voltages of
1000V or higher
— conditions that would cause arcing, flashover, or catastrophic failure in standard resistors. The design challenge at high voltages is not just power handling, but managing
electric field distribution, preventing corona discharge, and maintaining stable resistance values over a wide voltage range.
RARA's high voltage range is manufactured in five configurations — SMD chip, axial, radial, tubular, and planar
— to suit circuit board mounting, through-hole designs, and chassis-level installations. Technologies include thick film, metal glazed, and precision non-inductive designs, covering supply voltages from 3kV up to
90kV
with resistance values reaching
1 TΩ (1 teraohm).
At the precision end, the 400
Series achieves tolerances as tight as
±0.05%
and TCR as low as
5 ppm/°C
— among the best available for any high voltage resistor. The
HVI
series also offers ±1% tolerance and 25 ppm/°C TCR for demanding applications. The
GBR bleeder and divider series
provides application-specific solutions for voltage division, discharge, and measurement circuits.
Configurations Available
SMD thick film chip (HVTK, SMG)

Non-inductive models available
RARA high voltage resistors are manufactured in SMD, axial, radial, tubular, and planar configurations — giving engineers the right form factor for every high voltage design challenge from 1kV to 90kV.
Where RARA high voltage resistors are deployed in the field.
Medical Imaging & X-Ray
High voltage resistors are critical in X-ray generators, CT scanners, and electron microscopes — where supply voltages routinely exceed 50kV. The 400 Series precision non-inductive resistors and HVR tubular series are well-suited to medical HV power supply voltage divider and feedback circuits.
High Voltage Power Supplies
Bleeder resistors, voltage dividers, and feedback network components in HVDC power supplies, laser power supplies, and electrostatic equipment depend on stable, high-resistance components. RARA's GBR bleeder and divider series and HVP planar types are purpose-built for these roles.
Test & Measurement Equipment
High accuracy voltage measurement probes, oscilloscope HV probes, and precision voltage dividers require resistors with very low TCR and tight tolerance. The 400 Series (±0.05%, 5 ppm/°C) and HVI series (±1%, 25 ppm/°C) meet the stability demands of precision metrology instruments.
ESD & Surge Protection
HVTK thick film chip resistors are used in ESD protection circuits and high voltage signal conditioning on PCBs where compact footprint and high voltage standoff are required simultaneously — operating safely at voltages far beyond standard SMD resistor ratings.
Industrial High Voltage Systems
Electrostatic precipitators, plasma generators, ion beam systems, and high voltage test benches use tubular HVE and HVR series resistors for current limiting, voltage division, and discharge functions at supply voltages from 4.8kV up to 80kV.
Telecom & RF High Voltage
Transmitter power supplies, antenna tuning units, and radar systems operate at elevated voltages where standard resistors fail. Metal glazed MGR and SMG series provide stable high resistance values with good HF characteristics for RF and telecom high voltage applications.
