What Is a Resistive Heater?


A practical overview for engineers and procurement teams evaluating resistive solutions.



A
resistive heater converts electrical energy directly into heat by passing current through a resistive element. Unlike general-purpose resistors where heat is a byproduct to be managed, resistive heaters are designed specifically to generate and deliver heat to a targeted area — making them ideal for preventing condensation, maintaining component operating temperature, and keeping enclosures above the dew point in harsh environments.

RARA offers three distinct heater technologies.
Metal clad space heaters (RSHT/RSH series) are rugged aluminum-housed units rated 50W to 500W at 110–240V AC — the workhorse solution for cabinet and panel heating. PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heaters (YB series) are inherently self-regulating: as temperature rises, resistance increases and power draw automatically drops, providing built-in thermal protection without a thermostat.

The
GBR thick film heater series covers a wide range of compact, low-profile heating elements from 1W to 150W across supply voltages of 3V to 240V — suitable for PCB-mounted, chassis-mounted, and heatsink-coupled applications where precise, localized heating is needed in a small footprint.

Electrical Enclosure & Cabinet Heating

The RSHT/RSH metal clad space heater series (50W–500W, 110–240V) is designed specifically for installation inside electrical switchgear cabinets and control panels — preventing condensation that can cause short circuits and corrosion in outdoor or high-humidity environments.
Anti-Condensation & Dew Point Control

In cold climates or temperature-cycling environments, maintaining enclosure temperature a few degrees above the dew point prevents moisture damage to sensitive electronics. Low-wattage GBR thick film elements (GBR-620, GBR-618) are ideal for continuous low-level anti-condensation heating on 12–240V systems.
Power Distribution Boards

Power distribution boards in substations, wind turbines, and industrial plants use resistive heaters to maintain operating temperature and prevent condensation on bus bars, contactors, and protective relays. The GBR-601 and GBR-666 series are suited to these demanding continuous-duty applications.

Self-Regulating PTC Heating

The YB PTC heater series is inherently fail-safe — it cannot overheat because its resistance rises sharply as temperature increases, automatically limiting power consumption. This makes it ideal for battery warming, pipe heating, and anywhere a thermostat-free, self-regulating solution is preferred.
Industrial Process Heating

Thick film GBR heater elements (GBR-380, GBR-388) operate across a wide voltage range (12–240V) at defined power levels — suitable for precise process heating in food equipment, medical devices, and analytical instruments where stable, repeatable heat output is required.
PCB & Component Warming

Low-voltage GBR-603 (5W–30W, 12–48V) and GBR-618 (5W–20W, 3–24V) elements provide localized warming for temperature-sensitive components, crystal oscillators, and sensors in outdoor or cold-storage electronics where cold-start performance must be maintained.
