What are the RSR Series High Amperage Shunt Resistors?

The RSR is a large-current shunt resistor designed for accurate current measurement in power conversion equipment and precision metering instruments. Built for direct attachment to current bus bars, the RSR provides a stable, low-resistance current path whose voltage drop can be measured by a connected ammeter or monitoring circuit. This architecture simplifies installation and eliminates the need for external current transformers in many industrial applications. The series carries CE certification, confirming conformity with applicable European safety and electromagnetic compatibility directives.

The RSR range is organised into five model variants — RSR-1 through RSR-5 — covering rated currents from 10A up to 10,000A in a single coherent product family. The lightest variant weighs approximately 100g, while the heaviest RSR-5 reaches 13kg, reflecting the physical scale required to handle kilowatt-level continuous dissipation. An extended range beyond 4,000A up to 15,000A is available on request. Weight increases progressively with rated current, from 100g for RSR-1 to 13kg for the standard RSR-5, with correspondingly larger mechanical footprints.

The standard rated voltage drop across the shunt element is 50mV, with a 60mV variant available as a separate order option and a 100mV variant offered as a selectable option. This standardised output signal allows direct compatibility with panel-mounted ammeters and digital measurement systems designed for millivolt-range current sense inputs. Accuracy is rated at 3.0% as standard, with improved grades of 1.0% and 0.5% available to order, and precision grades of 0.2% and 0.1% offered for calibration-grade applications. Temperature coefficient of resistance is available in three grades — 30, 50, and 100 ppm/°C — enabling specifiers to match the resistor’s thermal stability to the accuracy class required by the installation.

The operating temperature range spans −55°C to +70°C, covering the ambient conditions found in outdoor substations, industrial enclosures, and transportation power systems alike. Tolerance options of ±0.5%, ±1%, and ±5% complement the accuracy grades and allow the RSR to be specified economically for applications ranging from utility revenue metering to general-purpose panel instrumentation.
