What are the SH-L Series High Amperage Shunt Resistors?


The SH-L is an interchangeable panel-mount shunt resistor built for current measurement range extension in instruments and metering systems. Like all shunt resistors in this product family, the SH-L operates by inserting a precision low-resistance element into the current path and measuring the millivolt-scale voltage drop that develops across it, allowing a connected ammeter or digital monitor to derive the actual current flowing through the circuit. The interchangeable format means that a single instrument can be reconfigured for different current ranges simply by substituting the appropriate shunt, making the SH-L particularly practical in multi-range panel installations and calibration environments.

The SH-L covers a rated current range of 1A to 2500A, with the resistance value selected to produce a standardised output voltage of 25mV, 50mV, 60mV, 75mV, or 100mV at full rated current. This results in a resistance range spanning 0.2mΩ to 16mΩ across the series. The physical dimensions of the SH-L scale progressively with rated current and voltage drop, reflecting the increasing thermal mass and conductor cross-section required at higher power levels. At the lighter end, 1A to 125A models have body lengths between 135mm and 175mm depending on the voltage drop variant. Mid-range models from 400A to 600A use shorter, wider bodies with lengths from 87mm to 126mm and conductor widths from 20mm to 40mm. The heaviest variants rated at 2000A and 2500A have overall lengths up to 184mm with terminal spacings to match large bus-bar installations.

Tolerance grades of ±0.5%, ±1%, and ±5% allow the SH-L to serve applications from precision revenue metering through to general-purpose panel indication. The two available TCR grades of 50 ppm/°C and 100 ppm/°C give specifiers control over measurement drift with temperature, with the tighter grade appropriate where ambient temperature variation is significant or where accuracy must be maintained over a wide operating envelope. The rated ambient condition of −25°C to +40°C with relative humidity up to 80% at 35°C covers the range of indoor industrial, transport, and telecommunications environments where the SH-L is commonly deployed.
