What are the SH-T Series High Amperage Shunt Resistors?


The SH-T is a heavy-duty interchangeable shunt resistor built for high-current measurement in power conversion equipment, industrial metering systems, and large-scale electrical installations. It operates by inserting a precision low-resistance element directly into the current-carrying conductor and measuring the resulting millivolt-level voltage drop, which a connected ammeter or data acquisition system converts into a calibrated current reading. The interchangeable construction allows the same instrument to be reconfigured for different current ranges by substituting the appropriate shunt, which is particularly useful in multi-range panel installations, test benches, and calibration facilities where flexibility and speed of range change are priorities.

The SH-T covers a rated current range of 50A to 12,000A, making it the highest-capacity member of the SH shunt family and suitable for the heaviest current measurement tasks encountered in industrial and utility power systems. The resistance range spans 0.4mΩ to 16mΩ, with the specific value determined by the combination of rated current and selected output voltage. Five voltage drop options — 25mV, 50mV, 60mV, 75mV, and 100mV — provide compatibility with the full range of panel ammeters and digital measurement instruments in common use. Physical dimensions scale substantially with rated current: lighter variants in the 50A to 600A range have body lengths from 100mm to 146mm with conductor widths from 22mm to 56mm, while mid-range models from 750A to 1200A share similar overall envelopes but with wider conductor sections. At the upper end, models rated from 5,000A to 12,000A reach body lengths of up to 300mm with conductor depths up to 70mm, reflecting the large cross-sections needed to carry and dissipate energy at kilowatt scale continuously.

Tolerance grades of ±0.5%, ±1%, and ±5% allow the SH-T to be specified for applications ranging from utility-grade revenue metering and precision power analysis through to general-purpose panel indication. The two available TCR grades of 50 ppm/°C and 100 ppm/°C enable specifiers to match thermal stability to the accuracy class of the installation, with the tighter grade appropriate where ambient temperature variation across the measurement range is significant. The operating envelope of −25°C to +40°C ambient with relative humidity up to 80% at 35°C covers the conditions found in indoor industrial switchgear, transportation power systems, and telecommunications power infrastructure.
