What are the AH Series Four-Terminal Precision Shunt Resistors?
The AH is a four-terminal precision shunt resistor designed for high-accuracy current measurement in instrumentation, laboratory, and industrial power electronics applications. Its Kelvin connection architecture maintains a strict separation between the current-carrying terminals and the voltage sense terminals. By routing the measurement signal through dedicated sense connections that carry no load current, the AH eliminates the contact resistance and lead resistance errors inherent in conventional two-terminal shunt designs, enabling repeatable and accurate voltage-drop readings directly proportional to the current under measurement.
The resistance range of 1mΩ to 100Ω covers both the low-resistance requirements of high-current sensing applications and the higher-resistance needs of lower-current precision measurement circuits. Power ratings of 3W and 10W provide a choice of physical size and continuous dissipation capability to suit the current level and thermal environment of the target application. Tolerance options of ±0.1%, ±0.5%, and ±1% allow the designer to select the grade of accuracy appropriate to the measurement system, from laboratory-grade instrumentation down to general industrial monitoring. The temperature coefficient of resistance of ±10 ppm/°C is among the tightest available for a shunt resistor of this type, ensuring that the resistance value — and therefore the current measurement — remains stable across the operating temperature range without the need for external temperature compensation.
The four-terminal configuration also provides immunity to the effects of connector and terminal block contact resistance variation that would otherwise introduce offset and drift errors in two-terminal shunt installations. This makes the AH particularly well suited to precision power analyzers, calibration equipment, and laboratory current sources where measurement integrity must be maintained over extended periods and across varying connection conditions. The series is offered by both RARA Electronics and RMS as part of their precision current sensing portfolios, reflecting the component's established role in demanding measurement applications.
