What are the ECS Series AEC-Q200 Chip Shunt Resistors?
The ECS series is a family of high-current, surface-mount chip shunt resistors engineered for precision current sensing in applications where conventional low-resistance components cannot accommodate the combination of very low milliohm values, high continuous current, and the thermal and mechanical stability demanded by automotive and demanding industrial environments. Each resistor is built around a precisely dimensioned resistive alloy element mounted on high-conductivity copper electrodes, which serve both as the electrical terminals and as the primary heat path away from the resistive element into the PCB copper or busbars connected at the pads. The heavy copper construction is a defining characteristic of the ECS series, enabling the high continuous current ratings and the long-term stability that distinguish it from conventional thick-film or thin-film shunt alternatives.
Three package sizes address different current and power levels. The ECS02 covers resistances from 0.2 mΩ to 10 mΩ at up to 6 W continuous power, with a maximum current of 173 A at its lowest resistance value. The ECS03 extends the lower resistance boundary to 0.1 mΩ, raises the continuous power rating to 12 W, and supports up to 245 A at 0.2 mΩ. The largest package, the ECS05, achieves 15 W continuous and up to 274 A at 0.2 mΩ, with resistance values covering 0.1 mΩ to 3 mΩ. Across all three packages, the resistive alloy material is selected according to the resistance value required: Copper Manganese Tin alloy (CM4) is used for the lowest resistance values where maximum conductivity is needed, Copper Manganese alloy (CM2) is used across the mid-range, and Aluchrom alloy is applied for resistance values of 1.5 mΩ and above where its stable TCR characteristic of ≤50 ppm/°C can be exploited.
Inductance is kept below 2 nH for ECS02 and below 3 nH for ECS03 and ECS05, confirming the series’ suitability for high-frequency switching circuits where inductive reactance in the sensing element would distort the current waveform and introduce measurement error. Long-term stability is defined by resistance drift limits after 2000 hours of continuous operation: ECS02 and ECS05 hold to less than 0.5% drift at terminal temperatures below 110°C, widening to less than 1.0% at terminal temperatures below 140°C; ECS03 holds to less than 0.5% below 100°C and less than 1.0% below 130°C. The full qualification test programme covers high-temperature exposure at 170°C for 1000 hours, temperature cycling from −55°C to 150°C for 1000 cycles with 30-minute dwell at each extreme, biased humidity at 85°C and 85% RH with 10% operating power for 1000 hours, operational life at rated power for 1000 hours, mechanical shock at 100 g, vibration from 10 Hz to 2000 Hz, short-time overload at five times rated power for five seconds, and low-temperature storage at −65°C for 24 hours.

Applications of the ECS Series AEC-Q200 Chip Shunt Resistors
Where RARA metal clad resistors are deployed in the field.
Hybrid and electric vehicle traction battery current sensing — inline shunt measurement of charge and discharge currents in high-voltage lithium-ion battery packs, where the very low resistance values minimise conduction loss across the shunt while the heavy copper construction handles the sustained high currents characteristic of EV powertrain operation
On-board charger current feedback — precision sensing of AC-to-DC converter output current in automotive on-board chargers, where AEC-Q200 qualification, low TCR, and stable long-term resistance drift support accurate regulation across the full charging cycle and ambient temperature range
Traction inverter and motor drive phase current measurement — low-side shunt sensing of motor phase currents in high-power traction inverters and industrial variable-frequency drives, where the low inductance of the ECS series avoids measurement distortion at the switching frequencies of modern SiC and GaN power stages
DC-DC converter current sensing for hybrid power sources — monitoring of current flow between battery, supercapacitor, and fuel cell sources in hybrid energy storage systems, where the ability to measure very low milliohm values at high continuous current enables accurate energy management across all operating modes
Frequency converter current measurement — shunt sensing within the DC bus and output stages of industrial frequency converters, where the combination of high power rating, low inductance, and stable TCR maintains measurement accuracy under the thermal and electrical stresses of continuous converter operation
Battery management system protection circuits — current sense feedback for overcurrent detection and short-circuit protection in automotive and stationary battery management systems, where the high current capability of the ECS05 allows a single shunt to be placed directly in the main battery current path
Automotive HVAC and thermal management systems — current sensing in high-current compressor drives and coolant pump motor controllers, where the AEC-Q200 qualification and wide operating temperature range of the ECS series confirm suitability for under-hood and battery thermal management environments
Power supply and UPS current monitoring — inline shunt sensing on the high-current DC output rails of server power supplies, uninterruptible power systems, and data centre power distribution units, where the compact SMT footprint and high power rating allow the ECS series to replace larger through-hole shunt assemblies
