What are the CSR Series Through Hole Shunt Resistors?


The CSR is a through hole current sensing resistor intended for series insertion into low-to-moderate current circuits where the magnitude of flowing current must be monitored for control, protection, or indication purposes. By presenting a defined low resistance in the current path, the CSR generates a proportional voltage drop that can be read by comparators, microcontroller analogue inputs, or dedicated current-sense amplifiers without requiring isolation or additional magnetic components.

The resistance range of 5mΩ to 200mΩ, combined with a rated current span of 2A to 12A, positions the CSR for general-purpose sensing duties in consumer, light industrial, and embedded electronics applications. At the lower resistance values the voltage burden imposed on the monitored circuit remains small, limiting power dissipation within the sensing element and avoiding unwanted interference with circuit regulation. At the higher end of the resistance range, the larger voltage signal produced at moderate currents simplifies the requirements placed on the downstream amplification stage.

Tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% reflect the CSR's positioning as a cost-effective solution for overcurrent protection, load detection, and general current monitoring rather than high-precision metrology. These tolerances are appropriate for applications where the sensing circuit operates with a comparator threshold or a microcontroller analogue input rather than a calibrated measurement chain, and where component cost and availability are primary design considerations.

The temperature coefficient of resistance of 260ppm/°C maximum follows from the wirewound or metal-element construction typical of this product class. This figure defines the worst-case shift in resistance — and therefore in the sensed voltage at a given current — as the component temperature rises under load or as the ambient temperature of the equipment changes. Through hole mounting provides secure mechanical retention on the printed circuit board, accommodating environments subject to vibration and repeated thermal excursions, while the axial lead form factor is compatible with standard PCB footprints and both automated and manual assembly processes.
