What are the MPR Series Through Hole Shunt Resistors?

The MPR is a through hole current sensing resistor designed for series insertion into power circuits where the magnitude of load current must be continuously monitored. Operating on the principle that a known resistance placed in the current path generates a proportional voltage drop, the MPR converts circuit current into a readable signal for downstream amplifiers, comparators, and analogue-to-digital converters without introducing significant impedance into the monitored branch.

The resistance range of 5mΩ to 400mΩ positions the MPR for applications carrying currents from a few amperes up to the tens-of-ampere range, where resistors in the lower milliohm decades are required to limit the voltage burden and power dissipation across the sensing element to acceptable levels. Power ratings spanning 3W to 20W within the same series allow designers to select the appropriate package size for the continuous current the circuit will impose, with margin for transient overload conditions. The higher wattage variants are suited to demanding industrial and power-conversion environments where operating currents are sustained over long duty cycles.

Tolerance options of ±1% and ±5% serve both precision measurement designs and cost-optimised protection circuits respectively. The maximum temperature coefficient of resistance of 260ppm/°C is characteristic of wirewound and metal-element construction in this power class, and specifies the worst-case drift in indicated resistance as the component heats under load. This parameter is an important design input when calculating measurement error budgets across the full operating temperature range of the host equipment.

Through hole mounting provides the MPR with secure mechanical anchoring in the printed circuit board, making the series suitable for industrial and power electronics assemblies subject to vibration, thermal cycling, and repeated inrush events. Axial lead construction is compatible with standard PCB footprints and supports both automated insertion and hand assembly. The breadth of power ratings within a single series allows the same electrical design to be scaled across product variants at different current levels without requiring a component family change or PCB layout revision.
