What are the HVTK Series High Voltage Thick Film Chip Resistors?
The HVTK is a surface-mount high voltage thick film chip resistor engineered to operate reliably at supply voltages far beyond the capability of standard SMD resistors. Built on a Ruthenium-based thick film resistive element, the HVTK series addresses the fundamental challenge of high-voltage circuit design at board level: managing electric field distribution within a compact footprint while maintaining stable resistance values across the operating voltage and temperature range. The series covers power ratings from 1/16W to 1W across package sizes from 0402 through 2512, with overload voltage reaching 4000V on the 2512 body.
Resistance values span 10Ω to 100MΩ, with tolerance options of ±1% and ±5% and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) ranging from 100 to 4000 ppm/°C depending on the variant selected. The rated continuous working voltage (RCWV) for each part is determined by the lower of the calculated value √(P×R) or the specified maximum operating voltage for that package, ensuring conservative and predictable voltage stress on the resistive element in service.
The standard SMD footprint compatibility of the HVTK series means it can be placed using conventional surface-mount assembly processes without special handling or board layout modifications. This makes it a practical drop-in solution for designs that require elevated voltage standoff without the size and cost penalty of through-hole or tubular high voltage resistors. Component marking follows standard EIA conventions: no marking on 0402 parts, four-digit marking for 1% tolerance in 0805 through 2512 packages, and three-digit E24 coding for 5% tolerance in 0603 through 2512 packages.
