What are the SMG Series Metal Glaze High Voltage Chip Resistors?

The SMG series is a range of surface-mount high voltage chip resistors using a metal glaze resistive element, designed to withstand operating voltages far in excess of conventional thick film SMD resistors. Three power-rated variants are offered — the SMG 1WL at 1W, the SMG 2WL at 2W, and the SMG 3WL at 3W — with maximum permissible DC voltages of 1600V, 3500V, and 5000V respectively. The metal glaze construction provides high stability against environmental stress, including resistance to sulfuration, elevated temperature, and humidity, making it suitable for industrial and outdoor-adjacent PCB applications where standard resistors would degrade or fail.

Resistance values span 47kΩ to 33MΩ, with tolerance options of ±1% and ±5%. The temperature coefficient of resistance is ±200 ppm/°C across the full operating range of −65°C to +200°C. The rated continuous working voltage (RCWV) for each part is determined by the lower of √(Rated Power × Resistance Value) or the maximum permissible voltage for that model, ensuring that voltage stress on the resistive element remains within safe limits across the resistance range. Power derating is required for ambient temperatures above 20°C in accordance with the published derating curve, with maximum element surface temperature not to exceed 275°C.

The SMG series is packaged in a flameproof UL94V-0 moulded body designed for automated surface-mount assembly, reducing placement and soldering costs compared with through-hole or axial alternatives. The construction incorporates anti-sulfuration protection, which prevents the resistive element from degrading when exposed to sulfur-bearing atmospheres common in industrial environments. Reliability characteristics include a load life drift of ≤±3% after 1000 hours at rated power and 70°C, and a moisture-proof load life drift of ≤±3% after 1000 hours at 40°C and 95% relative humidity, confirming suitability for long-term deployment in demanding operating conditions.
