What are the GBR-183 Series High-Voltage Thick Film Resistors?
The GBR-183 is a 2W high-voltage thick film resistor constructed on a 96% alumina ceramic substrate (Al₂O₃), representing the highest power-rated member of the GBR-18x series. Built on the same ceramic thick film platform as the GBR-181 and GBR-182, the GBR-183 extends the series’ capability to applications where sustained power dissipation of up to 2W is required alongside high-voltage operation, without compromising the stability, low-noise characteristics, or broad resistance coverage that define the series.
The resistance range spans 0.1Ω to 20MΩ in E24 preferred values, accommodating a wide variety of circuit functions from low-value current sensing to multi-megohm voltage division. Standard tolerance options of ±2% and ±5% are available across the full range, with tighter tolerances down to 0.1% obtainable on request. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is ±50 ppm/°C for resistance values above 1Ω and ±100 ppm/°C for values below 1Ω, ensuring stable and predictable resistance behaviour throughout the operating temperature range of −25°C to +85°C.
The GBR-183 is fully encapsulated in epoxy resin, providing robust protection of the resistive element against moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental contamination. This construction, combined with the inherent properties of thick film technology, delivers significantly higher stability and lower noise than conventional carbon resistors — qualities that are especially important in high-voltage circuits where leakage currents and dielectric stability directly affect system accuracy and reliability. The 2W power rating makes the GBR-183 the preferred choice within the series wherever elevated continuous power dissipation is a design requirement.
