What are the LCA 1000W to 4200W Series High Power Metal Clad Resistor Assemblies?

The LCA series is a family of cost-optimised, high-power metal clad resistor assemblies engineered specifically for high-power inverter braking units and large industrial motor drive systems where maximum wattage in free air is the primary design requirement. Each LCA assembly is comprised of two, three, or four high-power wire wound metal clad resistor elements housed within partial steel end covers — a practical and efficient construction approach that minimises material cost and assembly time without reducing thermal or electrical performance. The steel end covers are powder-coated for durability and corrosion resistance.

Available in two mounting orientations — LCAH (Horizontal) and LCAV (Vertical) — the series spans sixteen models ranging in free-air power rating from 1.0kW to 4.2kW, making the LCA the highest continuous free-air power rating catalogue product in the RMS metal clad resistor range. The horizontal LCAH configurations (LCAH3200 through LCAH11200) cover 1.0kW to 2.3kW in free air, while the vertical LCAV configurations (LCAV9600 through LCAV16800) extend the range from 3.0kW to 4.2kW — with the V-orientation's greater element count enabling the highest power densities. The model number suffix reflects the combined element wattage of the internal resistors.

The resistance range spans 0.6Ω to 864Ω for inductive winding and 0.1Ω to 222Ω for non-inductive winding depending on model, with tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% covering general industrial braking and load control specifications. The operating temperature range of –55°C to +200°C and a TCR of ±260 ppm/°C maximum ensure stable performance across the demanding thermal environments encountered in motor control cabinets and outdoor industrial installations.

Characterisation testing confirms reliable performance across moisture resistance (40°C / 95% RH for 500 hours), thermal shock (65°C for 30 minutes / –90°C for 30 minutes, 25 cycles), vibration (10Hz–55Hz, 2 hours per axis), moisture load life (40°C / 95% RH, 0.1× rated power, 500 hours), and extended full-power load life (1.5 hours on / 30 minutes off for 500 hours) — confirming the electrical stability and mechanical robustness required for continuous industrial braking duty.
