What are the MBH / MBV 1100W to 2900W Series Mini Braking High Power Resistors
The MBH and MBV series are compact, high-power metal clad resistors engineered specifically for dynamic braking and pulse-duty applications in industrial motor control systems. The defining characteristic of the MBH/MBV is their exceptional pulse power capability — six models covering continuous ratings from 1.1kW to 2.9kW can absorb pulse loads of up to 46kW at duty cycles as low as 5% (ED5%), making them an ideal solution for inverter braking applications where the resistor must absorb short, intense bursts of regenerative energy during motor deceleration rather than sustaining continuous full-rated dissipation.
The MBH (Horizontal) and MBV (Vertical) designations refer to the mounting orientation of the screw fixing pattern, providing design engineers the flexibility to select the configuration best suited to their cabinet layout and airflow management. Both variants share identical electrical specifications and body dimensions, with the extruded aluminium housing delivering rugged mechanical protection while efficiently radiating the thermal energy generated during braking pulse cycles.
Pulse power ratings are specified across four standard equivalent duty (ED) cycles — ED5%, ED10%, ED20%, and ED40% — referenced to a 120-second cycle duration. This allows engineers to precisely match the MBH/MBV to their specific braking duty profile rather than over-specifying on continuous rating alone: for example, the MBH/V 10800 can absorb 46kW at ED5% (6-second braking pulse every 120 seconds) while being rated at 2.9kW continuous. This pulse-optimised construction significantly reduces the physical size and cost of the resistor compared to a continuous-duty unit of equivalent peak capability.
An optional thermostat (suffix T) can be factory-fitted to monitor the resistor body temperature and provide an overtemperature trip signal — a valuable protection feature in high-cycle braking applications where thermal runaway would otherwise risk damage to the resistor or surrounding drive equipment. An optional terminal box is also available for applications requiring enclosed and protected electrical connections.
The resistance range spans 0.4Ω to 240Ω across the series, covering the typical braking resistor impedance values specified for standard inverter drive platforms. Tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% accommodate the majority of braking resistor specifications. Dielectric withstand voltage options of AC 1500V, 2500V, and 3500V are available, and insulation resistance is rated at 20MΩ minimum — suitable for installation on medium-voltage motor drive DC bus architectures.
Characterisation testing covers short-time overload (5–10× rated power for 5–10 seconds), moisture resistance (40°C / 95% RH for 500 hours), thermal shock (rated power for 30 minutes followed by –40°C for 15 minutes), moisture load life, and extended full-power load life — confirming the structural and electrical integrity required under the demanding thermal cycling conditions of repetitive braking duty.
