The BRH/BRV is a high-power aluminium-housed wire-wound metal clad resistor engineered for industrial drive and renewable energy applications where large, repetitive overload pulses must be safely dissipated. Its primary function is to act as a dump or braking resistor — absorbing the regenerative energy produced when a motor decelerates or when a wind turbine grid connection is interrupted, diverting that energy away from sensitive drive electronics and into heat.
Six frame sizes cover a continuous power range of 1.4kW to 3.4kW (free-air, 25°C), with short-duration pulse capability from 23kW up to 350kW depending on model and duty cycle. A resistance range of 0.5Ω to 240Ω accommodates the broad impedance requirements of variable-speed drives, inverter braking choppers, and regenerative converter systems. Tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% are available, with a temperature coefficient not exceeding ±260ppm/°C.
The aluminium housing functions as an integral heatsink when surface-mounted to a chassis or enclosure panel, dissipating the high peak thermal loads characteristic of braking duty cycles. A maximum surface temperature rating of 350°C and a working voltage of 600VAC confirm suitability for industrial drive voltages. An optional built-in thermostat is available for over-temperature protection in enclosed or poorly ventilated installations. All models are tested to a short-time overload rating of 10× rated power for 5–10 seconds, and insulation resistance is guaranteed at 20MΩ minimum, with dielectric strength tested at AC 1500V for one minute.
Braking application note: In variable-speed drive and inverter systems, the BRH/BRV is connected across the DC bus through a braking chopper IGBT. When bus voltage rises above the regenerative threshold — during motor deceleration, e-stop, or overhauling load conditions — the chopper switches the braking resistor into circuit, converting excess kinetic energy into heat and clamping the DC bus within safe operating limits. The BRH/BRV's high pulse power capability and robust aluminium construction are sized to handle the intense but brief thermal cycles this duty imposes.
