What is the HPR 1000W to 2000W Planar Power Film Resistor?

The HPR is a thick-film planar resistor engineered to deliver extreme power dissipation in a slim, PCB-mountable form factor. Available in three power ratings — 1000W, 1400W, and 2000W — each HPR unit is designed to mount flush against a heatsink or cooling plate, with the assembly geometry ensuring a consistent contact pressure of approximately 300N for effective and repeatable thermal transfer. This planar mounting approach allows power dissipation to occur above the board, keeping thermal energy away from surrounding PCB components and enabling high power density in compact drive and converter designs.

The resistive element uses thick-film technology on a planar substrate, yielding a non-inductive construction with a measured inductance of just 80nH and a capacitance of 110pF — making the HPR suitable for high-frequency switching environments where parasitic reactance in the resistor would otherwise degrade circuit performance. The thermal resistance of 0.12°C/W and the wide operating temperature range of −55°C to +170°C support demanding industrial duty cycles. A temperature coefficient of resistance of 0 ± 100ppm/°C ensures stable resistance across the full operating range.

The resistance range spans 1Ω to 100kΩ with tolerance options of ±1%, ±5%, and ±10%, addressing a broad set of load and braking impedance requirements. Dielectric strength exceeds 5kV, and the supply voltage rating of 8kV makes the HPR suitable for high-voltage bus architectures found in industrial drives and energy conversion systems. An optional internal temperature sensor — available as PT100, PT1000, or AD22105 — enables direct monitoring of resistor temperature within the assembly, supporting over-temperature protection and system diagnostics without the need for external thermal sensors.

Application note: In variable-speed drive (VSD) and motor control systems, the HPR is typically connected across the DC bus via a braking chopper circuit. During motor deceleration or emergency braking, regenerative energy raises bus voltage above safe limits; the chopper switches the HPR into circuit to absorb this energy as heat, clamping the bus and protecting power electronics. The planar thick-film construction is particularly advantageous in these applications: the non-inductive design minimises voltage spikes across the chopper switch during switching transients, while the flat heatsink-mount form factor integrates cleanly into drive enclosures and cold-plate cooling systems. For power supply and robotics applications, the HPR’s high power density and PCB-compatible footprint support high-performance load management and energy dissipation in space-constrained designs.
