What are the RTS-01 Series Heatsinkable Power Thick Film Resistors?


The RTS-01 is a high-power thick film resistor built on a 2mm stainless steel substrate, combining the thermal robustness of a metal-backed construction with the low-inductance characteristics of thick film technology. Rated at 100W continuous power when mounted on a heatsink, the RTS-01 is designed for applications that require compact, high-power-density resistors capable of withstanding repetitive transient overloads without degradation. The stainless steel substrate provides mechanical rigidity and efficient heat spreading, enabling direct thermal coupling to an external heatsink through the flat mounting face.

The resistance range spans 0.1Ω to 1MΩ using E24 preferred values, covering the impedance requirements of a wide variety of industrial power and control circuits. Tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% are available across the range, with a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±100ppm/°C. The maximum element surface temperature is 400°C, though this reduces to 170°C for variants fitted with soldered connectors or wires, reflecting the thermal limits of the solder connections rather than the resistive element itself. Dielectric layer breakdown voltage exceeds 2.5kV, confirming suitability for industrial line-voltage environments.

A defining feature of the RTS-01 is its very low inductance, which results from the thick film construction and the planar geometry of the resistive element. This makes the series suitable for high-frequency circuits where wirewound alternatives would introduce impedance errors due to inductive reactance. The SOT-227 footprint compatibility allows the RTS-01 to be installed in standard heatsink mounting positions alongside power semiconductors, simplifying mechanical integration into existing drive and converter assemblies.

The RTS-01 is available with eight terminal configurations to suit different wiring and assembly requirements. Contact and solder field variants (RTS-01-...-1) provide bare pads for PCB soldering or direct wire attachment. Soldered wire variants (RTS-01-...-2) ship with pre-attached leads. Faston connector variants are offered in 4.8mm and 6.3mm blade widths, each available at either 90° or 45° orientations (RTS-01-...-3/4.8, -4/4.8, -3/6.3, -4/6.3). Screw terminal variants are available with nuts (RTS-01-...-5/A) or screws (RTS-01-...-5/B), accommodating panel-wiring and field-installation scenarios. This breadth of termination options allows the same resistive element to be specified across prototyping, production PCB, and cabinet-wiring environments without redesign.
