What are the RQO Series High Power Capacitor Discharge Cement Resistors?


The RQO is a 10W cement resistor designed specifically for capacitor discharge and high-power pulse applications. Cement resistors of this type encase the resistive element in a non-combustible, thermally stable cement compound that provides both mechanical protection and a degree of thermal mass, allowing the device to absorb short-duration energy bursts well in excess of its continuous rating. The RQO is rated for a short-time overload of 10 times rated power — 100W — for 5 seconds, making it particularly suited to capacitor discharge circuits where the energy stored in a capacitor bank is released rapidly through the resistor on each operating cycle.

Three core technologies are available within the RQO range to cover different resistance requirements. Glass fibre core (GC) variants cover 0.5Ω to 1.5kΩ, ceramic core (CC) variants span 0.3Ω to 10kΩ, and metal oxide film (MO) variants extend the upper range to 75kΩ. This tiered approach allows the most appropriate resistive technology to be selected for the impedance required, with the glass fibre and ceramic core types suited to lower-resistance, higher-current discharge duties and the metal oxide film type addressing higher-resistance applications. Tolerance is ±5% for resistances above 1Ω and ±10% for resistances at or below 1Ω, in line with the practical tolerance achievable at very low resistance values in this construction type.

The temperature coefficient of resistance is specified at ±490ppm/°C maximum, which is consistent with the cement resistor construction and acceptable for the discharge and protection roles this series is designed to fulfil. Operating temperature range is −25°C to +155°C. Moisture resistance is qualified at ±[3%+0.05Ω] change after 500 hours at 40°C and 95% RH with DC 100V applied, and thermal shock endurance is ±[2%+0.05Ω] through the rated power and −25°C cycle. Moisture load life stability is ±[3%+0.05Ω] and dry load life stability is ±[7%+0.05Ω] (metal oxide film ±15%) after 1000 hours of 90-minutes-on/30-minutes-off cycling at rated power.

The RQO body measures 48mm in length by 13mm in diameter, with axial leads for through-hole mounting. Dielectric withstanding voltage is AC 1500V for 1 minute, and insulation resistance is guaranteed at 20MΩ minimum under DC 500V. Solderability is guaranteed at 75% coverage minimum. The fixed body dimensions and standardised lead format make the RQO straightforward to integrate into existing through-hole PCB layouts and chassis-mounted wiring configurations.
