What are the TPM 150W to 600W Series Chassis-Mounting Flat-Type Non-Inductive Power Film Resistors?

The TPM150–600 is a series of chassis-mounting thick-film power resistors built in a flat-type package designed for direct heatsink attachment. Four power ratings cover a continuous dissipation range of 150W to 600W, with the flat bottom-case profile ensuring maximum thermal contact area against the mounting surface. As with all heatsink-dependent thick-film chassis resistors, effective power management depends on proper thermal coupling — the bottom case must be mounted flush against a suitably rated air-cooled heatsink or water-cooled plate, and the case temperature at the centre of the bottom face is the governing thermal reference for derating and system design.

The resistance range of 0.1Ω to 1MΩ is exceptionally broad, making the TPM series applicable from low-impedance current-limiting and inrush control functions through to high-impedance voltage dividers, bleed resistors, and discharge networks. The ±5% standard tolerance and a TCR of 100ppm/°C ensure consistent, predictable resistance across operating temperature, suitable for the majority of power electronics and control circuit applications where precision is secondary to stability and power capability. The thick-film construction delivers the non-inductive characteristic that distinguishes this series from wire wound alternatives, suppressing series reactance that would otherwise introduce ringing or parasitic inductance effects in switching and high-frequency circuit environments.

The flat-type package format is a key differentiator of the TPM series within the RARA power film range. The low-profile body sits close to the heatsink surface, minimising the thermal path from the resistive element to the cooling mass and allowing tighter mechanical integration within panel-mounted assemblies and compact enclosures. This form factor also supports higher packing density when multiple resistors must be mounted in parallel or in close proximity, as the flat geometry avoids the elevated standoff height of TO-220 or TO-247-style housings. The result is a resistor series well suited to applications where both footprint and thermal management are constrained.

Application note: In power supply designs, TPM series resistors serve as bleed resistors across output capacitors to ensure controlled discharge when the supply is switched off, and as inrush-limiting resistors in pre-charge circuits that ramp DC bus voltage before the main contactor closes. In control equipment and automatic control systems, the combination of wide resistance range and non-inductive construction makes the TPM suitable for damping, filtering, and voltage attenuation roles. In power electronics — including inverters, converters, and motor drive output stages — the TPM can fulfil gate resistor, snubber, and load bank functions where the continuous power level exceeds the capability of PCB-mount resistors but the installation space does not accommodate a larger chassis-mount package. Across all these roles, the flat heatsink-mount construction provides the thermal path needed to sustain rated power dissipation reliably in continuous duty.
