What are the HPF250 Series 250W Non-Inductive High Power Thick Film Resistors?

The HPF250 is a 250W chassis-mounted thick film resistor engineered for demanding power electronics applications where both high power dissipation and non-inductive behaviour are essential. Unlike wirewound resistors — which exhibit parasitic inductance that can interfere with high-frequency switching waveforms — the HPF250 uses a thick film resistive element that presents negligible inductance, making it well suited to snubber networks, transient voltage clamp circuits, and RF attenuators operating across a wide frequency range.

The thermal design of the HPF250 centres on a 96% aluminium oxide (Al2O3) substrate interposed between the thick film element and the metal base. This ceramic layer provides the dual function of electrical isolation — delivering insulation resistance exceeding 1GΩ and a dielectric withstanding voltage of DC 5,000V for one minute — while simultaneously acting as an efficient thermal conductor that routes heat from the resistive film to the chassis-mounted fin structure. Thermal resistance from resistor surface to fin is specified at 0.1°C/W, enabling the full 250W rating when the base temperature is maintained below 100°C. The slim, flat body profile facilitates close mounting to heat sink surfaces and supports high-density panel layouts.

The HPF250 covers a resistance range of 5Ω to 1kΩ with a tolerance of ±10% (K code). The temperature coefficient of resistance is specified at a maximum of ±250 ppm/°C across the −55°C to +125°C operating range. Load life stability is rated at ±(2.0% + 0.05Ω) after 1,000 hours at rated power (1.5 hours on, 30 minutes off cycle at 25°C ambient), and moisture resistance is similarly rated at ±(2.0% + 0.05Ω) after 1,000 hours at 90–95% RH, 60°C, with 0.1× rated power applied. The unit ships with 200mm lead wires and requires a mounting torque of 15 kgf for secure chassis attachment. Single-resistor or dual-element (series/parallel) ordering configurations are supported.
