What are the RTS-02 Series Heatsinkable Power Thick Film Resistors?


The RTS-02 is a high-power thick film resistor constructed on a 2mm stainless steel substrate, sharing the same core technology as the RTS-01 while stepping up the power handling capability significantly. Where the RTS-01 is rated at 100W, the RTS-02 is available in 300W and 600W ratings, making it the natural choice for applications where a single compact resistor element must absorb substantially higher levels of continuous or pulsed power. The stainless steel substrate delivers mechanical rigidity and excellent thermal conductivity to the heatsink interface, enabling the high power density that defines the RTS-02 series.

The resistance range spans 0.1Ω to 1MΩ across E24 preferred values, with tolerance options of ±5% and ±10% and a temperature coefficient of resistance of ±100ppm/°C throughout. Maximum element surface temperature is 400°C for bare-substrate variants, reducing to 170°C where soldered connectors or wires are fitted, in line with the thermal capability of the solder joints. Dielectric layer breakdown voltage exceeds 2.5kV, confirming the RTS-02's suitability for industrial line-voltage and DC bus applications. As with all thick film construction, inductance is kept very low, preserving the resistor's intended impedance behaviour across a wide frequency range and making the series suitable for high-frequency power circuits where wirewound alternatives would introduce inductive error.

The RTS-02's physical construction uses standardised dimensions that allow straightforward heatsink mounting without proprietary hardware or adaptors. The flat substrate back face mates directly with a heatsink surface, and the elevated power ratings of 300W and 600W are achieved through the combination of the enlarged substrate area and the efficient thermal path this provides. This makes the RTS-02 particularly effective in enclosed cabinet or chassis-mounted installations where managing heat within a constrained footprint is a primary design concern.

Eight terminal configurations are available across the RTS-02 range. Contact and solder field variants (RTS-02-...-1) suit direct PCB or wire soldering. Soldered wire variants (RTS-02-...-2) are supplied with pre-attached leads. Faston connector variants are offered in 4.8mm and 6.3mm blade widths at 90° (RTS-02-...-3/4.8, -3/6.3) and 45° orientations (RTS-02-...-4/4.8, -4/6.3), allowing wiring routing to be optimised for the installation geometry. Screw terminal variants are available with nuts (RTS-02-...-5/A) or screws (RTS-02-...-5/B), covering panel-wired and field-installed applications. The same breadth of termination options as the RTS-01 means the RTS-02 element can be dropped into a range of assembly environments with no change to the underlying resistor specification.
