What are the TNP50S / TNP100S Series Power Thin Film Resistors (TO-247)?


The TNP50S and TNP100S are high-power non-inductive thin film resistors housed in the industry-standard TO-247 package, engineered for applications that demand reliable power dissipation in a compact, heatsink-mountable footprint. Both models are constructed using high thermal conduction alloys that enable excellent heat transfer to an external heatsink, making them particularly well suited to high-frequency and high-current circuit environments where conventional wirewound resistors would introduce unacceptable inductance.

The TNP50S delivers a continuous power rating of 100W and the TNP100S a rating of 140W, both referenced to a flange temperature range of −55°C to +25°C. In free-air conditions without a heatsink, both models are rated at 3W. Thermal resistance (hot spot to flange) is 1.3°C/W for the TNP50S and 0.9°C/W for the TNP100S, reflecting the larger thermal mass of the TNP100S package. Equivalent parallel capacitance is 2.35pF (TNP50S) and 3.68pF (TNP100S), with equivalent series inductance of 11.72nH and 12.25nH respectively — values that confirm the suitability of both models for high-frequency applications.

The full resistance range spans 0.02Ω to 51kΩ across three TCR bands: values from 0.02Ω to 0.09Ω carry a TCR greater than ±250ppm/°C (H grade), the mid-range of 0.1Ω to 9.1Ω is offered at ±100ppm/°C (A grade), and the upper range from 10Ω to 51kΩ achieves ±50ppm/°C (C grade). Tolerance options are ±1% (F) and ±5% (J), with the tightest tolerances available across the mid and upper resistance ranges. Maximum working voltage is 750V or the value given by E = √(P × R), subject to a maximum continuous operating current of 20A. Dielectric withstanding voltage is rated at AC 2500V between terminals and flange for 60 seconds, and insulation resistance exceeds 1000MΩ.

Reliability performance encompasses load life stability of ±[1.0%+0.05Ω] after 1000 hours of 90-minutes-on/30-minutes-off cycling at rated power, and equivalent stability under humidity testing at 40°C, 90–95% RH. Temperature cycle endurance across −55°C to +175°C for five cycles yields a change no greater than ±[0.25%+0.05Ω]. Vibration performance is qualified to IEC60068-2-6 (sine sweep, 100Hz to 2000Hz, 100m/s²). The device body is rated UL94V-0 for flammability. Insulation between the resistive element and the mounting flange is achieved through an integrated alumina substrate, eliminating the need for a separate insulating pad during heatsink mounting.

Lead lengths of 14.5mm and 27.5mm are available. Standard packaging is anti-static PE tube containing 25 pieces per tube, with tape-and-reel (27.5mm lead only, up to 8 pieces attached to mount paper with adhesive tape) and tray options also available for the 27.5mm variant. Unit weight is 6.4g for the standard lead length and 7.2g for the 27.5mm version.
