What are the TPK600 / TPK900 Series Chassis-Mounted Non-Inductive High Power Resistors?
The TPK600 and TPK900 are chassis-mounted thick-film power resistors housed in a compact TO-227 package, designed for applications where high power dissipation, low inductance, and mechanical robustness must coexist in a small footprint. The TPK600 achieves a 600W continuous power rating through a dual-element configuration, while the TPK900 delivers 900W in a single-element construction — both rated at flange temperatures from −55°C to +25°C. Effective thermal management requires the attachment of an appropriately sized air-cooled heatsink or a water-cooling solution; with adequate cooling, the compact TO-227 body enables higher-density packing than conventional wirewound chassis resistors of equivalent power rating.
The thick-film non-inductive construction is central to the TPK series’ suitability for high-frequency and fast-switching circuit environments. Series inductance is held to a very low level, preventing the voltage transients and ringing that inductive resistors can introduce across snubber networks, gate drive circuits, and pulse-handling stages. The resistance range of 50Ω to 1kΩ covers the E24+ standard series, with a tolerance of ±5% and a temperature coefficient of resistance of ±50ppm/°C ensuring stable and predictable resistance across the operating temperature range. M4 screw terminals provide mechanically secure termination with low contact resistance, well suited to vibration-prone industrial and audio environments.
The TPK series meets stringent environmental and reliability requirements: withstanding voltage is rated at 2500Vac for 60 seconds (1mA), insulation resistance between terminals and tab exceeds 1000MΩ, and resistance stability after 1000 hours of load life testing at 25°C is maintained within ±(1.0%+0.05Ω). Humidity endurance (40°C, 90–95%RH, 1000 hours) and thermal cycling (−55°C to +155°C, 20 cycles) both hold drift within the same tight limit, confirming suitability for harsh industrial and outdoor cabinet installations. Vibration-induced resistance shift is held within ±0.25%, and the short-time overload rating — 1.5× rated power for 2.5 seconds with cooling — accommodates transient pulse loads without degradation.
Application note: In power supply snubber networks, the TPK is placed in series or parallel with a snubber capacitor across switching devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs, diodes) to damp voltage spikes and suppress high-frequency ringing on the switching node. The non-inductive construction is essential here: any series inductance in the snubber resistor would reduce its damping effectiveness at the frequencies of interest. In gate drive circuits, the TPK functions as a gate resistor controlling the slew rate of the switching device, balancing switching loss against EMI generation. For loudspeaker crossover networks and theater audio damping circuits, the low inductance ensures that the resistor’s impedance characteristic remains flat across the audio band, preserving frequency response accuracy. The high vibration resistance and secure M4 termination additionally make the TPK well suited to transport, industrial, and broadcast installations where mechanical integrity is critical.
