What are the 5340 Series Precision Calibration Resistors?

The 5340 is a precision calibration resistor engineered to the tightest accuracy requirements in the RARA Electronics precision resistor family. With a tolerance of ±0.01% and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 5 ppm/°C, the 5340 is classified as a calibration-grade component — meaning its resistance value is stable and accurate enough to serve as a reference standard against which other resistors, instruments, and measurement systems can be verified. The resistance range spans 1mΩ to 1kΩ, covering the values most commonly required in laboratory and metrological reference applications. Power rating is 0.5W, consistent with a component intended for low-power signal and measurement environments rather than power dissipation duties.

The combination of ±0.01% tolerance and 5 ppm/°C TCR positions the 5340 as a secondary reference standard — a step above general-purpose precision resistors, but complementing the ultra-tight wire wound types (5G10 and 8G16 at ±0.005% and 3 ppm/°C) in the RARA calibration lineup. This makes the 5340 suitable for applications where traceability to national measurement standards is required but the extreme performance of the highest-grade wire wound types is not necessary. The low TCR ensures that the resistance value remains consistent across the operating temperature range of laboratory and metrology environments, where even small deviations in component value would introduce systematic measurement error.

The 5340 is part of a broader RARA precision resistor portfolio spanning metal film, thin film chip, MELF, wire wound, and high-power precision construction types, covering tolerances from ±0.005% to ±1% and TCR values from 3 ppm/°C to 100 ppm/°C. The 5340 occupies the calibration-standard tier of this range, designed specifically for use as a reference element in instrumentation and verification systems. RARA precision resistors are supplied to customers including Toshiba, Siemens, Rockwell, LG, and Schneider Electric, and are deployed in measurement, medical, and industrial applications across six continents.
