What are the RQL Series Ceramic Encased Wire Wound Resistors?

The RQL is a range of higher-power ceramic encased wire wound resistors designed for demanding power dissipation duties in industrial electronics and power conversion equipment. Extending from 10W up to 40W, the series occupies a higher power tier than the RQB family while retaining the same fundamental ceramic encased construction and wire wound resistive element. The ceramic housing provides robust mechanical protection and electrical isolation rated to AC 1500V for one minute, making the RQL suitable for deployment in line-voltage circuits and high-voltage industrial environments where reliable insulation between the resistive element and the mounting surface is required.

Three core constructions address different regions of the resistance range. The glass fibre core (GC) variant handles lower resistance values, beginning from 0.5Ω in the 10W rating, and is suited to high-current applications where a low and stable resistance is required. The ceramic core (CC) construction extends coverage into the mid-range, up to 15kΩ at 20W. The metal oxide film (MO) variant reaches the highest resistances in the series, up to 100kΩ, with a temperature coefficient of ±400ppm/°C compared to the tighter ±260ppm/°C of the wound core types. At higher power ratings of 25W, 30W, and 40W, only the glass fibre core construction is offered, reflecting the more specialised high-current, low-resistance focus of those variants. Tolerance is ±5% for all values above 1Ω and ±10% at or below 1Ω.

Reliability under sustained and cyclic loading is confirmed by a 500-hour load life test and a 500-hour moisture resistance test, with defined resistance drift limits for both. A short-time overload rating of ten times rated power for five seconds confirms suitability for circuits subject to transient surges. The operating range of −25°C to +155°C covers the majority of industrial installation conditions without derating. Thermal shock testing at rated power cycling confirms dimensional and electrical stability across temperature extremes.

Four mounting configurations are available to accommodate the different mechanical requirements of the higher power ratings. The G style uses a conventional axial lead format with a mounting bracket for chassis or panel attachment, available across 10W to 40W. The T style provides a tab-mount format suited to compact vertical or flat-panel mounting. The B style uses a bridge or clip mount for secure attachment to heatsinks or chassis walls, and the S style provides a snap-in variant for fast assembly. Body dimensions scale progressively with power rating to maintain safe surface temperatures at full rated dissipation, with body lengths ranging from 48mm at 10W up to 90mm at 40W.

Applications of the RQL Series Ceramic Encased Wire Wound Resistors

Where RARA wire wound resistors are deployed in the field.

The RQL series is suited to industrial and commercial power electronics applications requiring ceramic encased through-hole resistors capable of continuous dissipation from 10W to 40W. Typical uses include braking and dynamic discharge resistors in variable speed motor drives and servo amplifiers, DC bus bleed and pre-charge resistors in inverters and frequency converters
Load and dummy resistors in UPS and power conditioning systems, snubber and overvoltage clamp resistors in switch-mode power supplies and DC-DC converters, inrush-current limiting resistors in rectifier front-end circuits, current-sharing and balancing resistors in parallel-connected power stages, protective series resistors in high-voltage relay driver and solenoid circuits, and discharge resistors in capacitor bank assemblies.
The combination of robust ceramic enclosure, high dielectric withstanding voltage, and wide power rating range also makes the RQL well suited to use as test load resistors in power supply and battery charger test equipment, as well as in renewable energy power conditioning systems and industrial automation panels where reliable long-term performance under repetitive thermal cycling is required.
