What are the PC-199 Series Thick Film Rotary Potentiometers?
The PC-199 is a thick film rotary potentiometer built on a ceramic base and enclosed in a metal shield housing, combining the thermal stability and high dissipation capacity of ceramic-substrate thick film technology with the mechanical robustness expected of industrial control components. Unlike the carbon-on-paper construction of the PR series panel potentiometers, the PC-199 uses a thick film resistive element deposited directly onto a ceramic substrate, giving it substantially superior stability over temperature and time, and a higher power handling capability within a compact 19mm housing footprint.
The actuating mechanism consists of an isolated rotor carrying a carbon wiper that traverses the thick film resistance track as the metal shaft is rotated. This isolated rotor design electrically separates the shaft from the resistance element, improving safety and reducing the risk of parasitic conduction paths in high-voltage or noise-sensitive environments. The metal housing shields the resistive element from external electromagnetic interference and provides physical protection against contamination and mechanical damage. A hermetic sealed variant (suffix H) is available on request for applications requiring protection against moisture, dust, or corrosive atmospheres.
The resistance range spans 100Ω to 4.7MΩ using E6 preferred values, all in a linear (A) taper characteristic. The mechanical rotation angle is 240° ±10°, with the electrically active arc spanning 230° ±10°. Rated power dissipation is 1.0W at 40°C, derating linearly to 25% of rated power at 70°C. The limiting voltage of 350V confirms suitability for industrial line-voltage-referenced circuits. Rotational life is rated at 100,000 cycles, reflecting the durability demands of industrial control equipment where potentiometers may be adjusted repeatedly over the product lifetime.
Resistance tolerance is ±20% as standard for values at or below 470kΩ, widening to ±30% above that threshold, with a ±10% option available on request across the range. Two terminal configurations are offered: the PC variant provides PCB-mount pins for direct board insertion, while the PCP variant uses solder tags suited to cable attachment in panel-wiring and field-installation scenarios. A high running torque variant (suffix R) is available for applications where a firmer, more deliberate feel is required to prevent accidental adjustment. All units are supplied in bulk plastic bag and carton box packaging.
