What are the DG Series Precision Wirewound Potentiometers?

The DG is a precision single-turn wirewound potentiometer with a 310° mechanical rotation arc, distinguished within the precision wirewound range by two defining characteristics: a voltage limit of 750V AC and a resistance range restricted entirely to low-impedance values from 22Ω to 3.3kΩ. These two properties are directly related. Low-resistance wirewound potentiometers are inherently capable of supporting high voltage across their terminals provided the physical construction and insulation system are rated accordingly, and the DG’s 750V AC voltage limit — more than seven times the 100V AC limit of the DM multi-turn and DOW single-turn types — reflects a construction specifically engineered for use in high-voltage circuits where a precision adjustable resistance element is required.

The resistive element is formed by winding a precision resistance wire onto a suitable former, providing the low-noise, thermally stable, and long-term drift-resistant performance characteristic of wirewound construction. Across the full 310° single-turn travel, the wiper traverses the wound resistance track, giving the operator direct proportional control of the output resistance from zero up to the full rated value. The 14 resistance values in the range are arranged in a fine-grained sequence of preferred values across the 22Ω to 3.3kΩ span — denser than E6 spacing at the lower end — giving specifiers precise impedance matching capability for low-resistance divider, load, and current-sense circuit applications.

The power rating of 2W places the DG between the DM series (0.75W) and the DOW series (4W) in terms of dissipation capability, and its combination of 2W and 750V AC defines an operating envelope that neither of those types can cover. In practical terms, this means the DG can be used directly in circuits where mains-voltage or higher-voltage DC bus potentials are present, without requiring an external isolation barrier or voltage-divider pre-stage to protect the potentiometer from the supply. Resistance tolerance is ±10% as standard for values at or below 100Ω, reflecting the inherent production spread of very low resistance wirewound elements, while values above 100Ω are available in either ±5% or ±10% grades. The climatic category of 25/085/04 defines operation and qualification across +25°C to +85°C with limited humidity endurance, appropriate for indoor industrial and laboratory environments. Units are supplied in bulk plastic bag and carton box packaging.
