What are the SP Series Carbon Film Single-Turn Potentiometers?
The SP series is a carbon film single-turn potentiometer in a 29mm housing, engineered specifically for use in special equipment operating in demanding environmental conditions including extreme temperature ranges, high humidity, and wide barometric pressure variation. Where standard panel potentiometers are designed for benign indoor environments, the SP is intended for deployment in industrial, military, aerospace, and field instrumentation applications where ambient conditions cannot be controlled and the potentiometer must continue to perform reliably under sustained environmental stress.
The carbon film resistive element is housed within a 29mm body and operated by a 6mm metal shaft through a 255° ±5° mechanical rotation arc, with the electrically active portion of the track falling within 30° of the full mechanical angle. The running torque of 2 to 6 Ncm is maintained consistently across the full rotation range, providing a controlled, deliberate feel that resists accidental displacement in vibrating or shock-exposed environments. The stop strength of at least 50 Ncm ensures that the end stops withstand rough handling without mechanical failure. Shaft lengths of 16mm, 20mm, and 25mm from the mounting surface are available, with a bushing length not exceeding 9mm, accommodating a range of panel thicknesses and knob fitment configurations.
The SP is rated at a minimum of 1W power dissipation at 70°C, derating linearly to zero at 125°C, making it suitable for circuits carrying meaningful signal power as well as pure voltage reference functions. The dielectric withstanding voltage of at least 1000V AC and insulation resistance of at least 1GΩ confirm suitability for high-voltage-referenced and electrically isolated control circuits. The IP54 ingress protection rating provides dust exclusion and splash resistance, supporting deployment in environments where particulate contamination and moisture ingress are realistic hazards.
The resistance value is fixed at 10kΩ in the E6 series with a linear (A) taper characteristic, and a tolerance of ±10% is available on request. Independent linearity is specified at ±5%, defining how closely the actual output tracks the ideal linear relationship between shaft position and resistance, a parameter of particular importance in analogue control and feedback applications where positional accuracy translates directly to control precision. The rotational life of 15,000 cycles reflects the SP’s role as a setting and calibration control rather than a continuously operated user interface. Terminals are solder lug type, suited to cable attachment in panel-wiring and field-installation environments, and the potentiometer is secured against rotation by two anti-rotation lug pins. The SP series is RoHS 2 compliant.
