What are the 83-W Series Bulk Ceramic & Organic Resistor Washers?
The 83-W is a bulk ceramic and organic composition resistor in flat annular washer form, manufactured by sintering resistive particles within a binding medium to produce a rigid, homogeneous ring-shaped component. The washer geometry is a distinctive feature of the 83-W: the central bore allows the component to be threaded directly onto a bus bar, bolt, or terminal stud, integrating the resistor mechanically into the power connection itself rather than as a separately mounted device. This makes the 83-W particularly suited to applications where space is constrained and where placing the resistive element in direct contact with the current-carrying conductor simplifies the assembly and eliminates separate wiring.
Like all members of the 83-series, the 83-W shares the fundamental characteristic of bulk ceramic construction: a negative temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of −500 to −1500 ppm/°C. As current flows and the washer body warms, its resistance falls, allowing the circuit to transition from its high-impedance cold state to a lower-impedance warm operating condition without active switching or control. This behaviour is especially useful in soft-start and inrush-limiting roles, where the 83-W can be mounted directly in series with a power terminal and its resistance naturally diminishes as the system reaches steady-state temperature. The absence of wound wire means that the 83-W presents no inductive reactance, so it does not introduce oscillation or impedance errors in fast-switching or high-frequency surge environments.
The washer form factor also enables a stacking capability that is unique to this geometry within the 83-series. Multiple 83-W washers can be assembled in a coaxial stack on a single stud or bus bar to achieve resistance values, peak voltage ratings, or energy absorption capacities beyond those available in a single component. The contact surfaces of each washer are metallised in either aluminium or brass to ensure reliable inter-washer electrical contact within a stack and consistent connection to terminal hardware. An anti-track coating is available on both the outer diameter and the inner bore surfaces between the contact metallisation bands, suppressing surface discharge tracking in high-voltage service and extending the operating voltage margin in contaminated or humid environments. Power ratings span 3.8W to 327W across the range of available washer sizes, and resistance values extend from 20mΩ at the low end to 6.8kΩ at the high end — a resistance range that covers low-value current-limiting and inrush applications through to higher-impedance damping and snubber networks.

Applications of the 83-W Series Bulk Ceramic & Organic Resistor Washers
Where RARA ceramic resistors are deployed in the field.
Soft-start and power-on inrush limiting — washers mounted directly in line with power terminals or bus bar connections present high cold resistance at startup; negative TCR reduces voltage drop naturally as the system reaches operating temperature
Capacitor bank charge and discharge circuits — washer geometry allows direct integration into capacitor terminal connections, and bulk ceramic construction tolerates repetitive high-energy charge-discharge cycles
Crowbar and overvoltage protection networks — fast energy absorption across the full ceramic body without surface film failure under abrupt fault-level transients
Impulse voltage generators and pulse duty circuits — non-inductive washer elements absorb and dissipate high-energy pulses without introducing inductive overshoot
AC and DC motor drives — in-line washer resistors limit inrush current at motor startup and damp voltage transients on the DC bus
Dynamic braking systems — washer resistors mounted directly on braking resistor terminal studs absorb kinetic energy returned from the motor during deceleration
Electrical transmission and distribution equipment — compact washer format integrates into switchgear and bus bar assemblies for fault current limiting and surge absorption
Stacked washer assemblies for high-voltage applications — multiple 83-W washers in a coaxial stack on a single stud achieve voltage ratings and energy capacities beyond what a single washer can provide, in a form factor that remains mechanically compact
Snubber and damping circuits in power converters and inverters — non-inductive construction ensures the washer contributes purely resistive damping without modifying circuit inductance
Industrial and heavy equipment power connections — washer format mounts directly onto terminal bolts in panel-wiring and cabinet-assembly environments, eliminating the need for separate resistor mounting brackets or lead attachment

Why Choose RARA Ceramic Resistors
What sets RARA apart for engineers and procurement managers in industrial and automotive markets.
01
Unique Negative TCR
The -500 to -1500 ppm/°C negative TCR is a fundamental property of sintered bulk ceramic — exploited in inrush limiting, soft-start, and temperature compensation circuits where resistance must decrease with temperature rise.
02
Surge Tolerant by Design
The bulk distributed construction absorbs pulse and surge energy throughout the entire volume of the component — giving ceramic resistors exceptional pulse handling capability compared to surface-film types of equivalent power rating.
03
Five Form Factors
Axial rods, bare tubes, bare rods, washers, and disks — five geometries covering through-hole PCB, chassis, in-line bus bar, and panel mounting requirements in a single product family.
