What are the SFH / SFV 60-200W Metal Clad Resistors?


The SFH and SFV are the standard wire wound metal clad resistor series from RMS — robust, versatile, and engineered for the full spectrum of industrial power electronics applications. The SFH (Horizontal) and SFV (Vertical) designations refer to the mounting orientation of the chassis bolt holes, giving design engineers the flexibility to select the configuration that best suits their panel layout and heatsink arrangement without any compromise to electrical performance.

Both series share an identical extruded aluminium housing that provides strong mechanical protection while acting as an integrated heatsink when bolted to a chassis surface. This construction is optimised for sustained power dissipation in motor drive, regenerative braking, and snubber applications — environments where the resistor must reliably handle repetitive high-energy loading cycles over its full service life.

Available in six power ratings from 60W to 200W (all rated on heatsink), the series covers a resistance range of 0.1Ω to 2.2kΩ depending on model and winding type. Both inductive and non-inductive winding configurations are offered across the entire range, with the non-inductive option essential for snubber and high-frequency switching applications where residual inductance would otherwise impair transient suppression performance. Tolerance options of ±1%, ±5%, and ±10% accommodate both precision discharge specifications and general industrial current-limiting requirements.

The SFH/SFV series is also specified for electric vehicle charging infrastructure and industrial power source applications, where its combination of wide resistance coverage, flexible mounting geometry, and proven thermal performance under continuous load makes it a reliable choice for demanding duty cycles.
Dielectric withstand voltage is rated at AC 2500V (1 minute, 5mA leakage current maximum), insulation resistance is 100MΩ at 500Vdc, and heat resistance testing is conducted at 180°C for 2 hours — confirming suitability for high-voltage bus architectures and elevated ambient temperature installations.
