What are the ARN 0.5W to 6W Series Aluminum Nitride Thin Film Precision Chip Resistors?
The ARN series are precision thin film chip resistors constructed on an aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramic substrate, a material chosen specifically for its exceptionally high thermal conductivity. Aluminum nitride conducts heat far more effectively than the alumina substrates used in standard chip resistors, enabling the ARN series to achieve power ratings of up to 6W in the 2512 body size while maintaining the compact footprint of a conventional SMD component. Enlarged backside terminations further reduce thermal resistance between the resistive element and the PCB, making efficient heat removal the defining engineering characteristic of this series.
Four body sizes cover a continuous power range from 1/2W to 6W, all rated at 70°C with derating applied above that point to the maximum operating temperature of +155°C. The ARN03 (0603) is rated at 1/2W with a maximum operating voltage of 75V. The ARN05 (0805) is rated at 1W and the ARN06 (1206) at 2W, both with a 100V maximum. The ARN12 (2512) reaches 6W at 100V maximum. All four sizes share the same resistance range of 50Ω to 30.1kΩ, with the working voltage further constrained by E = √(P×R) where this formula gives a lower value than the stated ceiling. Four tolerance grades are available: ±0.1% (B), ±0.25% (C), ±0.5% (D) and ±1% (F), paired with TCR grades of ±25ppm/°C (C) and ±50ppm/°C (D).
Environmental performance is referenced to MIL-STD-202 and JIS-C 5201. Short-time overload stability is ±0.5% resistance change. Endurance stability after 1000 hours at 70°C under rated continuous working voltage (RCWV) with a 1.5-hours-on/0.5-hours-off duty cycle is ±1.0%. Damp heat with load stability is ±0.4% after 1000 hours at 40°C and 90–95% RH under the same duty cycle — a tighter figure than standard chip resistors, reflecting the moisture-resistant tantalum nitride film barrier layer used in the thin film construction. Thermal shock endurance across −55°C to +150°C for 100 cycles and high-temperature exposure at +155°C for 1000 hours both yield stability within ±0.2%. Resistance to soldering heat is ±0.2% at 260°C for 10 seconds.
The ARN series is AEC-Q200 qualified for automotive applications and compatible with IR reflow, wave and soldering iron assembly processes. Reflow peak temperature is 260°C for 10 seconds; wave and iron soldering peak temperatures are the same. Storage conditions are 15°C to 28°C and humidity below 80% RH, with a shelf life of 2 years from production date. Packaging is paper tape-and-reel for the ARN03, ARN05 and ARN06 at 5000 pieces per 178mm reel, and embossed plastic tape-and-reel for the ARN12 at 4000 pieces per reel. E96 and E24 resistance value coding applies depending on body size, with 3-digit marking on the 0603 and 4-digit marking on larger sizes.
