What are the CRP Series Aluminum Nitride Thick Film Resistor?
The CRP is a surface-mount thick film chip resistor engineered on an aluminum nitride (AlN) substrate — a material chosen for its exceptional thermal conductivity compared to conventional alumina. This substrate enables the CRP to dissipate significantly more heat per unit footprint, resulting in power ratings of 2.4W for the CRP06 (1206 package) and 3.5W for the CRP12 (2512 package), both specified at 70°C ambient. The combination of high power density, compact SMD form factor, and RoHS-compliant lead-free construction makes the CRP well suited to industrial and telecom power conversion equipment where board space is at a premium.
Two models cover a resistance range from 3Ω to 2kΩ (CRP12) and 10Ω to 2kΩ (CRP06), with tolerances of ±1% (E24/E96 series) and ±5% (E24 series). The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is specified at ±150 ppm/°C and typically measured at ±120 ppm/°C, ensuring stable performance across the full −55°C to +155°C operating temperature range. Maximum operating voltage is 200V for both models, with operating voltage determined as the lower of √(P×R) or the stated maximum.
The CRP construction comprises nine discrete layers: an aluminum nitride substrate, bottom and top electrodes, edge electrode, nickel barrier layer, external electrode, thick film resistive layer, and primary and secondary overcoat layers. This multi-layer architecture provides robust mechanical integrity and consistent electrical performance under thermal cycling. Short-time overload performance is specified at 4.7W for 5 seconds (CRP06) and 7.7W for 5 seconds (CRP12), with a maximum resistance change of ±0.50%. Shelf life is two years from production date when stored between 15°C and 28°C at humidity below 80% RH.
