What are the CE-CL-T Series Precision Wirewound Resistors?

The CE-CL-T series is a family of precision wirewound resistors offered in three distinct axial leaded body styles — C-E, C-L, and T — each targeting a different combination of physical size, power rating, and resistance range within the overall family specification. The C-E style covers the smaller, lower-power end of the range at 1/8W; the C-L style occupies the mid-range; and the T style provides the highest power rating in the family at 1W. Together the three styles span a resistance range from 0.1Ω to 1.5MΩ, making the CE-CL-T series one of the broadest-range precision wirewound families in the RARA catalogue — capable of addressing circuits from very low impedance current sensing networks through to high-impedance analogue signal conditioning and voltage reference designs in a single component technology.

Tolerance grades of ±0.01% and ±0.1% are available across the family, with ±0.05% offered on selected body styles and resistance values. TCR options range from ±5 ppm/°C at the tightest end to ±90 ppm/°C at the widest, with the achievable TCR determined by the specific body style, resistance value, and wire alloy used in the winding. For the majority of resistance values in the C-L and T styles, TCR grades of ±5 ppm/°C to ±15 ppm/°C are achievable — performance that places those grades squarely in the precision and near-metrology tier and confirms their suitability for defence, aerospace, and high-accuracy instrumentation applications where RARA specifically identifies the CE-CL-T as meeting the stability demands of mission-critical circuits operating from −55°C to +125°C.

Wirewound construction provides the CE-CL-T series with inherent advantages over film-type resistors in terms of noise, initial accuracy reproducibility, and long-term drift under sustained electrical load. The resistance wire is wound onto a ceramic former and encapsulated to protect against moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental contamination. Long-term stability is a defining characteristic: RARA's precision wirewound series are engineered for extended load life, maintaining resistance within specification over thousands of hours of operation — a requirement that differentiates them from resistors whose drift on initial measurement may satisfy tolerance but whose values shift progressively over service life. The ±0.01% tolerance grade, in particular, requires this level of long-term stability to remain meaningful in calibration and reference-standard applications.

Within the RARA precision wirewound family, the CE-CL-T series complements the single-body AX series (1Ω to 400kΩ, 1W, ±0.01%), the ultra-precision 5G10 and 8G16 series (TCR ±3 ppm/°C, tolerance to ±0.005%), and the GG102 series. The CE-CL-T is distinguished by its extended lower resistance reach down to 0.1Ω and its upper resistance reach to 1.5MΩ, offering greater span than the AX series, while the three body styles allow the designer to select the minimum physical size consistent with the required power rating — an important consideration in densely populated precision instrument circuit boards and calibration module assemblies.

Where RARA precision resistors are deployed in the field.

Calibration standards and resistance decade boxes — decade resistance substitution standards, transfer standards, and secondary reference resistors in calibration laboratories where ±0.01% tolerance and ±5 ppm/°C TCR must be maintained with traceability across the laboratory ambient temperature range
Precision measurement instruments — gain-setting, input scaling, and reference resistors in high-accuracy LCR meters, impedance bridges, resistance bridges, precision voltmeters, and data acquisition systems where the resistor tolerance directly determines the instrument’s measurement uncertainty
Wheatstone and ratio bridge circuits — matched bridge-arm resistors in strain gauge signal conditioners, load cell interfaces, pressure transducer front ends, and torque measurement systems where inter-arm resistance matching and low TCR minimise bridge offset and temperature-induced zero drift
Defence and aerospace electronics — precision resistors in avionics signal processing, inertial navigation units, radar front ends, missile guidance, and airborne sensor conditioning circuits where MIL-STD-202 qualification and operation from −55°C to +125°C are mandatory requirements
Op-amp precision feedback and gain networks — tight-tolerance feedback, input attenuation, and gain-trim resistors in instrumentation amplifiers, difference amplifiers, and precision integrators where gain accuracy and offset stability must be preserved across the circuit operating temperature range
Medical diagnostic and patient monitoring equipment — precision signal conditioning, biasing, and gain resistors in ECG, EEG, impedance measurement, and diagnostic analyser front ends where resistance accuracy and long-term stability directly affect clinical measurement quality and regulatory compliance
Very low resistance current sensing — the C-E style’s reach down to 0.1Ω makes it suitable for precision current sensing shunt applications where wirewound construction is preferred over foil types for specific stability or noise requirements in industrial and laboratory current measurement circuits
High-impedance signal conditioning — the T style’s resistance extending to 1.5MΩ serves precision high-impedance feedback, biasing, and input protection networks in electrometer front ends, photodetector transimpedance stages, and ionisation detector circuits
Industrial process control and transmitters — span and zero trim resistors in 4–20mA loop-powered transmitters, RTD and thermocouple signal conditioners, and process control analogue output modules where resistor drift over years of continuous operation must remain within process measurement tolerance
Voltage reference dividers and power supply regulation — precision output voltage-setting and feedback resistors in linear voltage references, precision power supplies, and regulated laboratory bench instruments where resistor pair matching and TCR tracking over temperature determine reference accuracy
