BCS Series AEC-Q200 Chip Shunt Resistors (BCS2512 / BCS3920 / BCS5930)

The BCS series comprises electron-beam welded alloy current-sense resistors built with pure copper electrodes, available in the BCS2512, BCS3920 and BCS5930 case sizes. Resistance values range from 0.1mΩ to 5mΩ depending on case size and resistive alloy, with power ratings (at 70°C) spanning from 2.5W up to 15W according to model and resistance value. Tolerance options of ±0.5%, ±1.0% and ±5.0% are offered, with temperature coefficient of resistance figures ranging from ±25ppm/°C to ±200ppm/°C depending on the alloy and resistance value selected. All three case sizes share parasitic inductance below 5nH and thermal EMF below 1μV/°C, and are rated for an operating temperature range of –55°C to +170°C. The series is RoHS compliant and AEC-Q200 qualified, and is supplied in tape-and-reel or bulk packaging.

What are the BCS Series AEC-Q200 Chip Shunt Resistors (BCS2512 / BCS3920 / BCS5930)?

The BCS series is a family of surface-mount current-sensing resistors manufactured using an electron-beam welding (EBW) process that joins pure copper terminals to a resistive alloy element, forming an all-metal structure with no solder or adhesive bonds in the current path. Three resistive alloys are offered across the range: Manganin (M), Fe-Cr-Al (F) and Karma (K), each chosen to balance resistance value, tolerance and temperature stability for a given application. Surface pickling and passivation treatment gives the construction strong resistance to weathering and environmental degradation, while the welded, all-metal build delivers excellent product consistency, high reliability and stability, and strong pulse-load capability.

Electrical performance is built around very low parasitic inductance, kept under 5nH across all three case sizes, together with thermal EMF held below 1μV/°C from 0 to 100°C. This combination gives the BCS series a fast response speed and makes it well suited to high-frequency AC current detection, where stray inductance or thermally generated offset voltages would otherwise corrupt the sensed signal. The BCS2512 is the smallest of the three footprints, offering resistance values from 0.3mΩ to 5mΩ at power ratings of 2.5W to 6W; the BCS3920 steps up to a larger footprint with resistance values from 0.1mΩ to 5mΩ and ratings of 3W to 12W; and the BCS5930 is the largest and highest-power option, covering 0.1mΩ to 3mΩ at ratings up to 15W. Across all three sizes, tighter tolerances and lower TCR figures are generally available on the higher-resistance, Fe-Cr-Al variants, while the Manganin variants extend down to the lowest resistance values in the range.

Each part is qualified against a comprehensive set of environmental and electrical tests, including short-time overload at five times rated power, resistance to soldering heat, high-temperature and high-humidity exposure, high-temperature storage, low-temperature load, 1000-cycle temperature cycling between –55°C and +155°C, and 1000-hour load-life cycling at rated current. A derating curve defines full rated power up to roughly 70°C ambient, with power capability falling linearly to zero as ambient temperature approaches 170°C, consistent with the series' –55°C to +170°C operating range. One note of caution applies to the Fe-Cr-Al (F) alloy variants: because this material is magnetic, it may interact with variable-frequency currents, so designers working with such currents should select the alloy option with care.

Applications of the BCS Series AEC-Q200 Chip Shunt Resistors (BCS2512 / BCS3920 / BCS5930)

Where RARA current sensing resistors are deployed in the field.

The low inductance, low thermal EMF and fast response of the BCS series make it well suited to high-accuracy current sensing in switch-mode power supplies and DC-DC converters, where measurement fidelity at high switching frequencies is essential.
The series is equally applicable to motor drive and inverter current monitoring, battery management and charging systems requiring precise current measurement, and power metering or energy monitoring equipment.
Its pulse-load capability and welded, all-metal construction also suit it to overcurrent protection and current-limiting circuits, industrial power conversion equipment, and general precision current-sense applications across automotive, industrial and consumer power electronics where reliability and long-term stability under thermal and electrical cycling are required.
