What is the IRS 30-50W Slim Metal Clad Resistor?
The IRS is a wirewound metal clad resistor built around a slim-profile aluminum housing designed specifically for chassis and panel mounting in space-constrained industrial enclosures. The aluminum body serves a dual purpose: it acts as both a mechanical enclosure protecting the resistive element and as a heatsink, conducting heat generated during operation away from the element and into the mounting surface. This construction allows continuous power dissipation of 30W or 50W depending on the selected variant, with the thermal path to the chassis being the primary mechanism by which rated power is sustained. The slim form factor distinguishes the IRS from conventional brick-profile aluminum housed resistors, making it particularly suited to designs where panel depth or inter-component spacing is limited.
The resistance range covers 1Ω to 500Ω, addressing the impedance requirements of drive, automation, and power conversion circuits where moderate resistance values are most commonly needed. Five tolerance grades are available — ±0.5%, ±1%, ±2%, ±5%, and ±10% — spanning from precision-grade specifications down to standard industrial grades, allowing the IRS to be specified for both controlled resistance applications and general power dissipation duties. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is rated at 260ppm/°C maximum, which is consistent with the wirewound construction and appropriate for industrial temperature environments where moderate resistance stability under thermal cycling is required.
As a metal clad resistor, the IRS benefits from the inherent mechanical robustness of an all-aluminium housing that protects the resistive element from moisture ingress, dust, and mechanical shock. This makes the series well suited to industrial environments where components are exposed to vibration or harsh ambient conditions. Chassis mounting is accomplished through the flat base of the aluminum housing, which is bolted or screwed directly to the enclosure wall or mounting plate, establishing both the mechanical fixing and the primary thermal pathway simultaneously. The series is manufactured under ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 certified quality management systems, and the product family meets UL and CE requirements where applicable.

Applications of the IRS 30-50W Slim Metal Clad Resistor
Where RARA metal clad resistors are deployed in the field.
Industrial variable speed drives and motor control panels, where slim chassis-mounted resistors are needed for current limiting, braking, and load discharge functions within compact enclosure formats.
AC and DC drive systems requiring dynamic braking resistors installed in space-constrained control cabinets, where conventional block-profile housings would not fit within available panel depth.
Power supply and UPS discharge networks, where controlled resistive discharge of capacitor banks or energy storage elements requires a chassis-mounted resistor capable of sustained power dissipation.
Industrial automation and robotics motion control systems, where servo amplifier and motor drive circuits generate resistive braking energy during rapid stop-start cycles in confined enclosures.
Control panels for conveyor, elevator, and hoist systems, where moderate resistance values and chassis-mount form factors are standard requirements for braking chopper and motor protection circuits.
Test and measurement load circuits, where a compact, low-profile power resistor is required to simulate a resistive load or provide controlled current limiting in a benchtop or rack-mounted instrument.
Telecommunications and industrial power conditioning equipment, where discharge and bleed resistors must be accommodated within a slim panel-mounted format alongside power conversion components.
