What is the BRVA432K Braking High Power Resistor Assembly?

The BRVA432K is a high-power metal-clad wire-wound resistor assembly engineered for industrial drive systems, renewable energy installations, and hydrogen fuel cell applications requiring robust, repeatable energy dissipation under demanding pulse conditions. The assembly combines three BRV14400 resistor elements into a single integrated unit, delivering a maximum pulse power of 138 kW at a 45-second duty cycle — referenced to one single square pulse every 1,800 seconds — with a resistance range of 2.0 Ω to 240 Ω covering the impedance requirements of industrial braking chopper circuits, dump loads, and fuel cell power conditioning systems.

Tolerance options of ±5% (J) and ±10% (K) are available as standard, with a temperature coefficient not exceeding ±260 ppm/°C. The assembly's maximum surface temperature rating of 350°C and a working voltage of 600 VAC confirm suitability for industrial drive bus voltages. Dielectric strength is tested at DC 2000 V for 1 minute (maximum leakage current 10 mA), and insulation resistance is guaranteed at 20 MΩ minimum. The short-time overload rating of 10× rated power for 5 seconds accommodates the intense repetitive pulse loads characteristic of braking duty cycles and hydrogen fuel cell load-transient events. An optional thermostat enables over-temperature signalling for enclosed cabinet and containerised installations.

Braking, dump load & hydrogen fuel cell application note: In variable-speed drive systems, the BRVA432K is connected across the DC bus through a braking chopper IGBT. During motor deceleration or emergency stop events, regenerative energy raises bus voltage above the regulation threshold, triggering the chopper to switch the BRVA432K into circuit. In wind turbine and solar inverter applications the assembly functions as a dump load resistor, dissipating excess generated power during grid fault or overspeed events. In hydrogen fuel cell systems, the BRVA432K is deployed as a controlled load-dump resistor across the fuel cell DC output bus: during rapid load-off or emergency disconnection events, the resistor absorbs the fuel cell's residual energy output, clamping bus voltage within safe limits, protecting downstream power electronics, and preventing fuel cell membrane damage caused by sudden pressure and current transients.
