What are the GBR-666 Series Thick Film Heating Elements?


The GBR-666 series are thick film heating elements fabricated on a 96% alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramic substrate, designed to deliver high power density in a compact footprint across a broad range of supply voltages. Rated at 10W to 100W continuous on a heatsink, with a 2-second pulse capability of 200W, the GBR-666 occupies a similar power tier to the GBR-619 but is distinguished by two notable characteristics: a unidirectional positive TCR of +50 ppm/°C rather than the bidirectional ± specification common across most of the GBR range, and a supply voltage ceiling of 240V, which is the highest nominal voltage rating in the standard GBR thick film heater catalogue. These attributes make the GBR-666 particularly well suited to applications powered directly from international mains supplies where the supply voltage may reach the upper end of the AC 230V tolerance band.

Standard catalogue configurations cover two DC bus voltages — 12V and 24V — at three power levels each: 20W, 40W, and 60W. The voltage range supported extends to 240V, meaning the element can also be specified for mains-voltage AC applications and higher-voltage DC systems by way of custom configurations available on request. The resistance value for each variant is selected to deliver its rated output at the nominal supply voltage, and all variants carry a power tolerance of ±5%. The maximum permissible element temperature is 300°C, consistent with other high-power members of the GBR family. The 200W pulse rating for 2-second durations provides useful transient power headroom for applications involving inrush loads, rapid warm-up cycles, or intermittent high-demand thermal tasks alongside lower steady-state operation.

Electrical connection is via contact and solder fields on the element surface, offering flexibility for both spring-contact and soldered wire or PCB attachment configurations. In addition to their primary role as heating elements in custom heater and precision surface-heating assemblies, the GBR-666 series elements can function as high-power resistors in circuits requiring a heatsinkable, ceramic-substrate dissipation element with a known and stable resistance value. The thick film construction and planar geometry inherently limit parasitic inductance, making the series appropriate for use in power electronics environments where inductive reactance in a load element would be undesirable.
