What are the CB1000 Series Automotive Shunt-Based Current Sensors?

The CB1000 is an automotive-grade current sensing module designed for accurate, bidirectional DC current measurement in high-voltage battery and power systems. Built around a low-TCR shunt resistor, the sensor integrates a high-precision analogue-to-digital converter and digital signal processing to deliver current measurements with a maximum accuracy of ±0.1% across the full operating temperature range of −40°C to +105°C. The architecture combines the low-impedance shunt element with galvanic isolation between the high-voltage sensing circuit and the low-voltage communication interface, enabling safe installation at either the positive or negative main electrode of a battery system.

Current data is transmitted over a CAN 2.0 A/B bus at a default rate of 500 kbps, with selectable speeds from 125 kbps to 1 Mbps. The CAN identifier and data frame format are configurable, with four frame formats available: Format A and Format B each transmit current and temperature in separate frames, while Format C combines both in a single frame, and Format D transmits current only. The sensor supports two measuring modes — a time-interval mode that sends data at a fixed rate whilst also responding immediately to command triggers, and a command-triggered mode in which the sensor transmits data only when requested by the host. Response delay from trigger receipt to data transmission is less than 5 ms in both modes.

The CB1000 is available in three rated current variants — 350 A, 600 A, and 1000 A — with shunt resistance values of 25 µΩ and lower, depending on the specific configuration. The module is housed in a compact enclosure with copper bar connection terminals on the high-voltage side and a four-pin Molex connector on the low-voltage side carrying CAN_H, CAN_L, VCC, and GND. Recommended copper bar overlap and torque specifications are defined to ensure consistent contact resistance and long-term mechanical stability. The sensor meets the full suite of VW 80000 electrical load, climatic, and mechanical qualification tests, as well as applicable ISO electromagnetic compatibility and ESD standards, confirming suitability for series production automotive applications.
