What are the CB350 (CBMA Series) Automotive Shunt-Based CAN Current Sensor?

The CB350 is an automotive-grade, shunt-based current sensing module from the CBMA series, designed to measure bidirectional DC current with high accuracy and report measurements digitally over a CAN 2.0 A/B bus. Built around a low-TCR precision shunt resistor with a nominal DC impedance of 50μΩ, the module integrates a high-precision analogue-to-digital converter, onboard signal conditioning, temperature compensation across the full operating range, and a galvanically isolated CAN interface into a single compact package. The result is a self-contained current measurement module that connects directly into the main current path of a battery system and communicates real-time current and temperature data to a battery management system or vehicle control unit without requiring any external signal processing hardware.

The CB350 supports a continuous operating current range of ±350A with a measurement accuracy of ±0.5% or better across the full −40°C to +105°C automotive temperature range in the high-current region, and milliampere-level resolution at low currents. Tolerance grades are available from ±0.05% (B) through to ±1% (K), allowing selection of the appropriate measurement accuracy for the application. The integrated temperature sensor provides a secondary measurement of shunt and PCB temperature with a range of −50°C to +150°C, a maximum error of ±3°C, and a resolution of 0.1°C, which the module uses for internal current compensation and can also transmit to the host system for state-of-health monitoring. Galvanic isolation between the high-voltage shunt circuit and the low-voltage CAN interface is rated at 1000VAC, enabling safe installation at either the positive or negative electrode of a high-voltage battery system.

The CAN interface operates at selectable speeds of 250kbps, 500kbps or 1Mbps and supports four configurable data frame formats. Formats A and B each transmit current and temperature in separate frames with cyclic counters and exception flags; Format C combines current and temperature in a single frame; Format D transmits current only. CAN ID is configurable, and the module supports both standard and extended frame types as well as Motorola and Intel byte ordering. Two measurement triggering modes are available: a periodic time-interval mode and a command-triggered mode in which the host BMS requests measurements on demand. Start-up time from power-on to first valid CAN message is 100–150ms. The module is qualified against a comprehensive suite of automotive electrical, climatic, and mechanical stress tests to VW 80000, ISO 7637-2, ISO 10605, CISPR 25, and ISO 11452, and is available in shunt sizes of 69×18mm, 85×18mm, 84×36mm and 85×36mm to suit different copper bus bar connection geometries.
